  16. <p>    Stormin' Norman Says No
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    Ross Perot is not the sort of politician who would pick a
  19. running mate from, say, New Hampshire just to bring geographical
  20. balance to the ticket. He'd rather draft a can-do hero. Insiders
  21. say Colin Powell has been on his short list. But Perot's
  22. greatest ticket-building efforts so far, according to one
  23. report, have been spent trying to woo Desert Storm commander
  24. NORMAN SCHWARZKOPF. Frustrated voters would be likely to cheer
  25. Stormin' Norman as just the sort of guy who could help get
  26. things done in Washington. But Schwarzkopf, who reportedly has
  27. turned down Perot at least twice, regards the Texan with dismay
  28. as a loose cannon. Besides, he is believed to have political
  29. aspirations of his own, and third parties are no place for
  30. national heroes to launch a second career.

  32. <p>    L.A. Law, Wilson-Style
  33. </p>
  34. <p>    California Governor PETE WILSON has launched an official
  35. investigation of the National Guard's response during the Los
  36. Angeles riots last month. No wonder: he called up the Guard at
  37. 9 p.m. on the first night of rioting, as hundreds of fires
  38. burned. But by 2 p.m. the following day, as the looting
  39. continued, the troops were still not on the streets. Wilson
  40. demanded an explanation, and was told that the Guard was short
  41. of ammunition. Asked the onetime Marine: "If you give each man
  42. one bullet, and a larger quantity to unit commanders, can you,
  43. No. 1, ensure the Guard's safety and, No. 2, accomplish your
  44. mission?" Guard commanders said they could. Wilson exploded,
  45. "Then divide up the f---ing ammunition and get out there!"
  46. Before order was restored, other state officials even considered
  47. placing the city under martial law. Meanwhile, the talk in some
  48. law-enforcement circles is that if any major urban unrest
  49. occurs, Wilson may just skip the frustration and ask for the
  50. Marines.

  52. <p>    Tapes of Wrath
  53. </p>
  54. <p>    Muslim extremists are widening their following in Saudi
  55. Arabia. Despite the kingdom's jailing of the 20 leading Saudi
  56. fundamentalists, tape recordings of their sermons seem to be
  57. everywhere. The fundamentalists maintain that American troops
  58. were sent to the gulf not to fight Saddam Hussein but to prepare
  59. for war between Christianity and Islam. The Saudi preachers also
  60. contend that Protestants from the West have been exploiting
  61. tensions between Israel and its Arab neighbors to this end. They
  62. cite actions by American Presidents Richard Nixon and Jimmy
  63. Carter as well as televangelists Jimmy Swaggart, Jerry Falwell
  64. and Pat Robertson as "proof." Their advice to their followers:
  65. seek converts, especially in America; send Korans and money to
  66. Palestinian Muslims and urge them to procreate; and commission
  67. the best weapons that money can buy -- from Japan.

  70. </p>
  71. <p>    In Patpong, the glitzy sex district of Bangkok, video
  72. pirates usually specialize in illegal copies of feature films
  73. and music videos. Lately, though, they can't keep a hot
  74. political video in stock. It seems that government-controlled
  75. Thai TV did not carry footage of the police violence against the
  76. huge pro-democracy demonstrations in Bangkok last month. Thai
  77. citizens are now catching up with what the rest of the world saw
  78. happening in their own country.

  93. to have a favorite new job for Sam Skinner. Dream replacements:

  98. <p>    Roger Ailes. The taint of Willie Horton lingers, but Bush
  99. needs a tough guy almost as much as he needs a clear image.

  103. <p>    During the environment summit in Rio last week, a
  104. Brazilian group called Defenders of the Earth was updating its
  105. Lie-O-Meter on a billboard nearby. Purpose: to track "deceit,
  106. from 0 to 100" among participants. At week's end the U.S.
  107. delegation was scoring 100.
